Wilbur J. Snyder

Wilbur was born on September 13, 1917, and passed early Monday morning, July 25th of 2016. His parents were James William Snyder and Emma Mae Rinehart Snyder who lived in Camden, Ohio. He had two older sisters, Elma and Lois, and one twin brother, Wilmer.Wilbur graduated from Dixon Township High School in 1935. After five years of farming, he was employed with Crosley Radio Corporation in Richmond, Indiana for nine months helping to build refrigerators, cars and cook stoves. In 1941 he enrolled at Manchester College. Near the end of his freshmen year, he was drafted into the United States Army. Wilbur requested noncombatant service in the Medical Corps. He served 45 months, including 28 months in Africa and France. Wilbur returned to Manchester in 1946, graduating in 1948 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Business Administration and Accounting. Hired by Brotherhood Mutual Insurance Company in Fort Wayne, Indiana, Wilbur served as Vice President and Treasurer and on the Board of Directors for 35 years.Wilbur and Eileen met at the Church of the Brethren in Richmond, Indiana, and they were married in April 1943. They had four daughters who are now married to four great men: Karen and Jim Troxel in Chicago, Illinois; Margo and Eldon Krider in Fairview, Michigan; Jody and Dale Warner in Huntertown, Indiana; and Connie and Herman Kauffman in Nappanee, Indiana. Wilbur now has seven grandchildren and one great-grandchild.Wilbur and Eileen were charter members of Beacon Heights Church of the Brethren in Fort Wayne, Indiana, and served on many church committees. They spent nine winters in Arizona, one year volunteering at the Brethren Service Center in New Windsor, Maryland, and three summers at the Greenville Brethren Home in Ohio. Wilbur and Eileen enjoyed vacation trips to California, Hawaii,China, and Europe. Throughout his life Wilbur has enjoyed playing tennis, golf,bowling, shuffleboard, pool, croquet, euchre and marbles.Wilbur and Eileen moved to Timbercrest in 1994. Eileen died in April 2000. While at Timbercrest, Wilbur volunteered in many activities, including ushering,delivering mail and working in the archives at Manchester University. His favorite activity was planting and maintaining many flowerbeds. Visitation will be at 10:00 AM Friday, July 29, followed by the memorial service at11:00 AM in the Timbercrest Chapel, 2201 East Street, North Manchester, IN. Pastor Kurt Borgmann will officiate.
