Walter L. Niccum, 97, North Manchester, Indiana, passed away at 12:43 a.m. on November 4, 2019 at Kosciusko Community Hospital, Warsaw, Indiana. One of six children, Walter was born on February 27, 1922 in Chester Township, Wabash County, Indiana, to Albert L. and Mary K. (Karn) Niccum.
At the age of twenty, Walter married Doris I. Cripe on January 1, 1942. The two were wed for sixty-six years before Doris passed away on June 19, 2008. Walter found happiness once again, and on June 6, 2010 he married Marie M. Betten.
Walter began his career as a farmer and then made the leap to owner of Mutual Grain Company. He owned Mutual Grain for twenty-nine years before becoming manager of Eastern Indiana Ag Equipment, where he worked for thirteen years. Walter also worked for Peebles Realty, Wabash, Indiana, for eleven years, where he was a top seller several times. He was also a volunteer fireman for Chester Fire Department for seventeen years. Walter enjoyed working hard, but he also relished in his time spent traveling around the United States, deer hunting trips to Wyoming, fishing, mushroom hunting, and reading Zane Grey books. He also believed in the value of education; Walter was instrumental in keeping Agricultural Education in Manchester High School.
Walter L. Niccum is survived by his wife, Marie M. Niccum, North Manchester; three sons, Paul D. (Jo Lynn) Niccum, Thomas J. (Vicki) Niccum, both of North Manchester, and Roger D. (Diane) Niccum, Indianapolis; sister, Dorothy Byers, North Manchester; eight grandchildren, thirteen great-grandchildren, and five great-great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; first wife Doris I. Niccum; brother, Edward R. Niccum; and three sisters, Doris Boocher, Mae Metzger, and Fern Long.
Family and friends may call Friday, November 8, 2019 from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon at Liberty Mills Church of the Brethren, 103 North 3rd Street, Liberty Mills, Indiana. Funeral services will begin at the conclusion of calling. Pastor Erin Huiras will officiate. Burial will be at Fairview Cemetery, Servia, Indiana.
