Susan K. Yeatter Brown, age 72, transitioned from this physical world on Tuesday, June 13, 2017. Susan was born in Chicago, IL, on September 14, 1944, to David B. and Mary (Smith) Yeatter. When Susan was 6, she moved with her older sister and parents to North Manchester, IN, where her dad took a job at Manchester College. She attended school in North Manchester, graduating from Manchester High School in 1962. She went on to attend college at Manchester College. She was able to spend her junior year abroad in Marburg, Germany. Susan then went on to graduate school in Nebraska.
Susan moved to Chicago, IL, where she married and had her first daughter, Adrienne Ann Brown, who passed at the age of 15 from heart disease in 1984. By this time, Susan was living in Harrisburg, PA. She survived being hit by a car shortly after her daughter’s passing, and astounded the doctors by walking again. Her second daughter, Claire, was born in 1986. They moved to Columbia, Maryland, when Claire was young, where Susan was determined to make the best out of single motherhood. She continued using her computer skills, this time, working as a computer programmer. Susan survived both a heart attack and cancer before retiring from Lockheed Martin in 2015. She excitedly moved back home to Indiana, to be near her “Indiana Family” in the spring of 2016. Suddenly Susan found herself in another bout with cancer, and while Susan survived her battle with cancer 8 years ago, this journey with cancer helped usher her home.
Susan loved helping other people the most. Throughout her life, she took other children into her home and provided them with mentorship, a safe and loving home, and the skills to help them become the person that they wanted to be. This was one of her favorite things to do in life. She loved to meet people out and about and she also loved spending time with family and friends. She loved reading, and camping, playing cards, and working a good jigsaw puzzle. And she loved watching and making people laugh.
Susan will always be remembered for her love of her children, her creative spirit, clever sense of humor, and her endless energy. She is known for her connection with nature, her love of “deep” discussions, and her huge heart! Susan is survived by her daughter, Claire E. Brown. She is also survived by her sisters, Ann Hammer of Perth, Australia, Jane Yeatter of Harrisburg, PA, and Nancy Y. Sare of Roann, IN. She is also survived by nieces and nephews and their children, both in Australia and Indiana.
Celebration of life for Susan will take place the weekend of June 24, 2017. Visitation will be at McKee Mortuary on Saturday, June 24th from 3-6 pm. There will be another visitation time from 1-2 pm on Sunday, June 25th, with services following at 2:00 p.m. at the Manchester Church of the Brethren, North Manchester, IN.
