Roberta G. Hoffman passed away Friday, August 25, 2017 at 4:55 a.m. in Timbercrest Senior Living Community, North Manchester, IN.
Roberta was born on January 3, 1924 in Detroit, MI to John P. and Hazel (Eversole) Guthrie. She attended public schools and graduated from Southeastern High School where she was active in both academic and extracurricular activities.
She entered Manchester College in 1942 and earned a BS degree in Home Economics in 1946 and was active in many activities. She then married David L. Winger and in 1949 their daughter Susan was born and Roberta worked in secretarial positions while David attended law school.
She returned to Manchester College in 1954 after her divorce to qualify for teaching positions and upon completion, returned to Detroit where she taught ten years in elementary grades, mostly in Hazel Park Schools.
In 1955 she married John W. Dickey and their son Robert was born in 1957. She enjoyed John’s three children although they were separated by many miles. John passed away in 1995 after a long illness. She was active in the Detroit Church of the Brethren and later in the Methodist Church in Flushing, MI.
In 2001 she married Tim R. Hoffman, whom she knew from her earlier college times and joined him in the Timbercrest Retirement Community and the Church of the Brethren. They enjoyed their life together, renewing friendships and making new friends. Roberta enjoyed her family, her friends, reading and traveling, especially in later years.
Surviving are her husband: Tim R. Hoffman, children: Susan M. (Edward) Kernish and Robert L. (Julie Haris-Jundt) Dickey, step children: James S. (Vicki) Dickey and John M. (Joan) Dickey, grandchildren: April (Brandon) Pavach, Andrew (Kat) Dickey and Carlen Kernish. Step granddaughter, Kimberly (Ken) Thornhill, step great grandson, Ben and Alex Thornhill and step great granddaughter, Isabella Pavach. Her sister, Margaret G. (Clarence) Stites and stepdaughter, Janet C. Dickey predeceased her.
A memorial service will be September 9, 2017 at 11:00 a.m. at the Peace Garden of the Church of the Brethren, 1306 Beckley Street, North Manchester, IN. Pastor Kurt Borgmann will officiate.
