Robert M. Miller, 96, North Manchester, IN died at 11:55 a.m. Tuesday, November 5, 2013 in Timbercrest Healthcare Center, North Manchester, IN. He was born August 7, 1917 in Long Beach, CA to Dr. Robert H. & Maude E. (Reiff) Miller. In 1922, the move to a very familiar North Manchester was made. His father, Dr. R.H. Miller was pastor of the then Walnut Street Church of the Brethren and later in 1928, Dr. Miller joined the faculty at Manchester College. Robert M. Miller attended North Manchester Schools, graduating from Manchester College in 1939. For two years he worked for the C.G. Conn Co of Elkhart, IN. He served in the United States Army from April 1941 to November 1945. He graduated from Wayne University at Detroit, MI with a Masters Degree in Chemistry.He taught science at Avilla, IN for two years, and from 1950-1963 he was a research chemist relating to photosynthesis and solar energy conversion at the C.F. Kettering Foundation Laboratory in Yellow Springs, OH. From 1963-1983 he returned to teaching, first, three years in a Dayton, OH high school and then at the Citrus Community College, Glendora, CA. Following his retirement he enjoyed woodworking. He married Catherine H. Hersch February 20, 1943. She died November 26, 2006. Remaining family includes three sons, Mike Miller, Colorado Springs, CO / David Miller, Cucamonga, CA and Rick Miller, Stockbridge, MA, a daughter, Sue Hurd, North Manchester, IN and their families. A brother, Dr. John D. Miller and a sister, Mary M. Coe are no longer living. In honoring Mr. Miller's request, private burial will be in Oaklawn Cemetery, North Manchester, IN.
