Phyllis H. Lutz

November 15, 1922 — March 4, 2017

Phyllis H. Lutz, 94 died Saturday, March 4, 2017, at 9:30 PM at Peabody Retirement Community's Health Care unit, North Manchester, IN. After only one month battling physical infirmities, her strength diminished, yet her unwavering faith in God, and the love and prayers of family, friends and many supporters carried her through. Our heartfelt thanks is given to the medical staff, hospice care, special care givers, meal personal providers, and spiritual encouragers. Phyllis was born November 15, 1922, in Michigan City, IN, to Charles L. Henry and Phyllis (DeVoe) Henry. After attending Western College, Oxford, OH for two years, she graduated from Purdue University, Lafayette, IN, with a Bachelor of Science degree in 1945. Warren Clinic, Michigan City, IN, employed Phyllis as a bacteriologist, then Walter H. "Bud" Lutz and Phyllis were united in marriage on October 16, 1946. Walter died May 2, 2000. Over the next many years six children filled their home. These surviving children are Thomas R. Lutz (Wendy) Lutz, Peru, IN; Barbara (Don) Kolish Teal, Las Vegas, NV; David (Mary) Lutz, Phoenix, AZ; Daniel (Andrea) Lutz, Muncie, IN; Katherine Lutz Helpling, Las Vegas, NV; Patricia (James) Day, Corpus Christi, TX. From these children Phyllis delighted in 16 grandchildren and 21 great-grandchildren. Phyllis had one brother Thomas Henry who preceded her in death. Phyllis experienced a full life being a member of Alpha Chi Omega and was a charter member of the Peru Chapter CQ of P.E.O. sisterhood. She was a charter member of the Miami County Symphony Unit, was involved as a tutor with the Miami County Adult Literacy Program and served as a deacon of her church. Since 1996 Phyllis was a resident of Peabody's Retirement Community. In 2014, Phyllis was humbled by being honored to be the first recipient ever of the 'Resident Volunteer of the Year Award', receiving a uniquely designed stained glass art piece picturing the beautiful Peabody Tower. Phyllis became a member of the local Zion Evangelical Lutheran Church of America on the 9th of September in 2001. A 'Celebration of Life' service is planned for Sunday, March 19th, 2017, at 10:00 AM, at the Strauss Center Chapel, on the Peabody Retirement Campus, officiated by Chaplain Sue Babovec. Memorials can be made out to the Caring Circle at Peabody's Retirement Community. Therefore if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; old things have passed away; behold, all things have become new.
