Mildred "Milly" L. Gilbert

Mildred Lucille Morris Gilbert, 87, North Manchester, IN died at 2:20 p.m. on Wednesday, October 3, 2012 in Timbercrest Healthcare, North Manchester, IN. She was born in McPherson, Kansas on March 15, 1925 to Charles S. and Miriam Morris. On June 9, 1945 she married J. Edward Gilbert. Surviving are three daughters, Janice Gilbert Hurst, McPherson, KS; Janean Gilbert, Indianapolis, IN and Janelle Gilbert Hoffmann, New Haven, MO. Also surviving are four grandchildren and one great grandchild. She was preceded in death by her husband J. Edward Gilbert who passed away on March 25, 2012, her parents, a daughter Joyce, and her brother Dwight Morris. Milly graduated from Chester High School in 1943 and attended Manchester College. Following her marriage to Ed, she joined him in College Park, Maryland during his service in the Civilian Public Service (CPS) during WWII. Afterwards, Ed and Milly moved to Kokomo, Indiana, where Milly worked as a secretary for the Salvation Army and the Kokomo Church of the Brethren. She also ran a free-lance mimeographing business from her home for more than 25 years. Milly loved writing poetry. She was a member of the Kokomo Poetry Circle for 42 years and received awards and recognition for her poems, some printed in national publications. She was an active member of the Kokomo Church of the Brethren and later was a member of the Manchester Church of the Brethren when they moved to Timbercrest Senior Living Community in 1996. Services will be held Monday, October 8, 2012 at 2:00 p.m. in Timbercrest Chapel, 2201 East Street, North Manchester, IN. Friends and family may call at Timbercrest Chapel from 12:00 - 2:00 p.m. on Monday. Pastor Kurt Borgmann will officiate and burial will follow at Oaklawn Cemetery, North Manchester, IN. Arrangements are entrusted to McKee Mortuary, 1401 State Road 114 W, North Manchester, IN.
