Maynard Eugene Vollmer, 93, North Manchester, Indiana, passed away March 25, 2021 at Parkview Regional Medical Center, Fort Wayne, Indiana. Brother to Louis Dale and Marjorie Irene Vollmer, Maynard was born in Bremen, Indiana, on November 15, 1927 to the late Urban G. and Cleo R. (Schrader) Vollmer.
At the age of seventeen Maynard joined the United States Navy during World War II. After Boot Camp in New York, Maynard was stationed at Green Cove Springs, Florida and worked as a machinist while cleaning Vought F4U Corsair Planes for takeoff. Once Maynard had fulfilled his duty in the Navy, he was Honorably Discharged and returned home.
On August 18, 1950 Maynard married Barbara Jean Robison in Oswego, Indiana. During their first few years of marriage, Maynard worked at the Oswego SuperMarket in Oswego, Indiana, for his wife’s family. He left the supermarket to start Maynard’s Men’s Shop in North Manchester, Indiana, which he and Barbara owned and operated from 1963 to 1995. This quickly became Maynard’s passion. He loved to help people with their clothing needs and enjoyed conversing with customers when they came into the store. During his thirty-two years of owning the shop, Maynard loved the town of North Manchester, and he became a staple of the community.
“Maynard will be fondly remembered as the kind gentleman who could correctly size up your dimensions during a fitting just by looking at you. If you were a regular customer, he knew your size and preference from memory. If you were a friend, you will miss Maynard’s morning, hospitality of coffee and sports talk.”
During their nearly sixty years of marriage, Maynard and Barbara had three daughters, Christine, Amy, and Ruth Vollmer. Maynard loved pie and often teased his wife about there being something wrong with the piece he was eating just so he could have another. He loved to joke and was known for his generous, caring soul. Maynard was always cautious of hurting others’ feelings. On July 13, 2010, Maynard sadly felt the deep loss of his wife, Barbara.
After retiring in 1995, Maynard and Barbara moved back to Lake Tippecanoe, where Maynard could be found out in his chair watching the boats go by, fishing, playing golf, and watching the Cubs and Indiana University. He always pushed those things aside, however, when it came to his grandchildren. Maynard never missed an event they had.
A lifelong Lutheran, Maynard was a charter member of Redeemer Lutheran Church in Warsaw, Indiana and attended St. John’s Lutheran. Maynard was also a member of Kiwanis in North Manchester and the American Legion Post #49, Warsaw, Indiana.
The loving memory of Maynard Eugene Vollmer will be forever cherished by his daughters, Christine (Charles) Jones, Markle, Indiana, Amy (Michael) Isenberg, Fort Wayne, Indiana, and Ruth (Thomas) LaSalle, Leesburg, Indiana; six grandchildren, three great-grandchildren; and his friends at Timbercrest Senior Living, North Manchester, Indiana. Maynard was preceded in death by his parents, Urban G. and Cleo R. Vollmer; wife, Barbara Jean Vollmer; brother, Dale Vollmer who lost his life during his service in Germany in World War II; and sister, Marjorie Tinkey who passed away in 2014.
