James "Jim" Baker

James "Jim" Baker, a lifetime resident of North Manchester, passed away on January 27, 2025, at Timbercrest Healthcare Center, at the age of 89. Born on March 17, 1935, in North Manchester, to John and Ruby (Westafer) Baker, Jim lived a life marked by joy, faith, love of family and sports.

Jim graduated from High School in 1954, where he took great pleasure in participating in basketball, baseball, softball, track, and volleyball. His athleticism and team spirit carried through to his adulthood, where he continued to be an ardent fan of all sports, with a particular affection for the Chicago Cubs. After retirement, Jim would retreat to Arizona during the winters, eagerly attending many Cubs spring training games, a tradition that brought him much happiness.

A man of unwavering faith, Jim was a dedicated member of the First Brethren Church in North Manchester, where he connected deeply with his faith and community. Those who knew Jim will remember him for his infectious happiness and gentleness—a man who truly embodied the spirit of kindness and grace.

Jim’s service to his country was significant; he honorably served two years in the Army, spending eighteen months in Germany. This experience shaped not only his character but also his regard for duty and dedication. Upon his return to North Manchester after his military service, Jim embarked on a successful career as a machinist at Manchester Tool and Die.

In a love that began with a blind date arranged by friends, Jim married Pollyanna Davis on September 7, 1957, in Eau Clair, Wisconsin. Together, they shared a life full of cherished memories and laughs until Polly's passing on June 20, 2007.

The loving memory of Jim Baker will be forever cherished by his daughters, Kristi (John) Kozon, Mesquite, Nevada and Kari (Todd) Speicher, Warsaw; brother, Buford Baker, North Manchester; sisters, Judy (Dennis) Carlson, Middlebury, Linda Sumpter, Warsaw, Debbie Gay, Columbia City; six grandchildren, Dustin “Dusty” Butterbaugh, North Manchester, Miriel (Ryan) McFarland, Akron, Evan (Jaci) Speicher, Mishawaka, Brandy (Michael) Hatfield, Cromwell, Jessica (Josh) Michael, Syracuse, and Summer Kozon, Tampa Bay, Florida; and eight great-grandchildren. Jim was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Pollyanna “Polly” Baker; brothers, Jack Baker and Russell Baker; and sister, Peggy Workman; brothers-in-law, Dennis Gay, Michael Sumpter, and Richard Workman; sisters-in-law, Norma Baker and Betty Baker. 

Family and friends may call Monday, February 3, 2025 from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon at the Timbercrest Chapel, 2201 East Street, North Manchester. Funeral services will begin at the conclusion of calling with Pastor Kurt Stout officiating. Burial will be at Oaklawn Cemetery, North Manchester.
