Claypool, Indiana

Emma J. Helton Slone, 83, Claypool, Indiana, passed away May 7, 2020, at Kosciusko Community Hospital, Warsaw, Indiana. One of ten children, Emma was born October 23, 1936 in Floyd County, Kentucky to John and Myrtle (Hale) Helton.

When Emma was seven, her mother was killed in a tragic car accident. Emma quickly became a mother figure to her other brothers and sisters, raising and nurturing them the best she could while still going to school herself. In 1955 Emma graduated from Prestonsburg High School and soon moved to Silver Lake, Indiana. For thirty years Emma worked as an office manager and bookkeeper at Kralis Brothers Food Inc., Mentone, Indiana.

On November 2, 1968, Emma married Cornelius Slone. The two were wed for twenty-six years before Cornelius passed away on July 18, 1995. One of Emma’s favorite things to do was to be around her First Free Will Baptist of Kosciusko County church family, where she was a member. Emma also enjoyed going to garage sales and relaxing by doing crossword puzzles and word searches. She also relished her time working in the yard and reading.

The loving memory of Emma J. Helton Slone will be forever cherished by her step-son, Joe Slone; step-daughters, Linda Needler and Shelly Dryer; brother Don (Janet) Helton, Silver Lake, Indiana; and countless nieces and nephews who she thought of as her own children. Emma is preceded in death by her parents; husband, Cornelius Slone; five brothers, Carl “Dude”, James Willard, John H., Fred, and Ellis Helton; three sisters, Thelma Hicks, Irene Phillips, and Elsie Dotson.

A graveside service will be held Monday, May 11, 2020, at 1:00 p.m. at Lakeview Cemetery, Myrtle Glen Drive, Silver Lake, Indiana. Pastor Terry Bradford will officiate.
