Edgar C. (Ed) Butterbaugh, 83, North Manchester, IN died at 4:50 p.m. Tuesday, April 12, 2011 at Timbercrest Healthcare Center. He was born at Chicago, IL on June 4, 1927 to D. Wright & Cleta Mae (Stoneburner) Butterbaugh. On August 2, 1952 he married E. Joann Marks. She survives. Also surviving are two sons, Jeffrey Butterbaugh, San Luis Obispo, CA and Jon (Debbie) Butterbaugh, Alexandria, VA. Two daughters, Janet (David) Weber, Harrisburg, PA and Jane Schmidt, Kansas City, MO. Five grandchildren and a sister, Mrs. Dick (Doris) Dehler, Orlando, FL. One sister is deceased. Ed graduated from Oak Park (IL) High School, Manchester College and did graduate work in accounting at Northwestern University. He passed the CPA exam in 1954. He recalled having a Vocational Guidance class in 8th grade and his major project writing a paper on why he wanted to become a CPA. He began his employment with Ernst & Ernst (now Ernst & Young) in 1951 in the Chicago office. In 1962 he started an office for Ernst & Ernst in Tucson, AZ. The family moved to Tucson primarily for their son Jeffrey's health. Ed was made a partner in 1965 and remained in charge of the Tucson office until his retirement in 1987. He was active in numerous business and community organizations. He was honored as Tucson Man of the Year in 1985. His interest in Manchester College was demonstrated by serving over twenty years on the Board of Trustees. He also served as interim president for the 1993-1994 academic year. In recognition of his service to the college he was awarded on Honorary Doctor of Laws degree in 1998. Ed learned the virtue of patience as he was a lifelong Cub fan. Services will be held Saturday, April 16, 2011 at 2:00 p.m. in Timbercrest Chapel, 2201 East Street, North Manchester, IN. Friends and family may call one hour prior to the service at the chapel. Pastor Kurt Borgmann and Joan Deeter will officiate and burial will follow in Pleasant Hill Cemetery, North Manchester, IN.
