Donald Thomas Stone

Donald Thomas Stone, 92, North Manchester, IN died at 6:05 a.m. Tuesday, July 5, 2011 in Lutheran Hospital, Ft. Wayne, IN. He was born at Lagro, Wabash County, Indiana on January 22, 1919 to Thomas Henry & Laura Etta (Troxel) Stone. On May 27, 1951 he married (Marilyn) Jean Kintner. She survives. Also surviving are two sons, Karl (Elaine) Stone, Gettysburg, PA; Jon (Sandra) Stone, Emerald Island, NC. Four daughters, Beverly (Charles) Malooley, Bloomington, IN; Kathryn (Charles) McCarty, Avon, IN; Edith Stone, North Manchester, IN; Jill (Richard) Spenner, Roanoke, IN. Sixteen grandchildren. Two sisters, Ruth Ellen Stone, North Manchester, IN and Emmalou (Robert) Rice, Lagro, IN. One daughter, two brothers and one sister are deceased. Donald graduated from Lagro High School in 1937 and attended Manchester College from 1938-1941. From 1941-1945 he served in the US Army-Air Corp. and was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross and Air Service Medal. In 1947 he graduated from Manchester College with a BA in mathematics. He earned a Masters of Science in Education from Purdue University. For several years he was a salesman for Standard Oil in the Indianapolis area. In 1986 he retired from Peru Community Schools after 28 years as head of the math department. Prior to that he taught at Bunker Hill High School and various other high schools during his 42 year teaching career. He was a member of the Peru Lions Club, Wabash County Retired Teachers Association, North Manchester Historical Society, Wabash County Geneological Society, 8th Air Force 487 Bomb Group Historical Society. He was a member of the Manchester Church of the Brethren and a former member of the Peru Church of the Brethren where he served as treasurer and a deacon for 24 years. He enjoyed camping, traveling with family and woodworking. Services will be held Friday, July 8, 2011 at 11:00 a.m. at Manchester Church of the Brethren, 1306 Beckley Street, North Manchester, IN. Friends and family may call on Friday from 9:00 a.m. - 11:00 a.m. at the church. Pastor Karen Eberly and Rev. Joan Deeter will officiate and burial will follow at Hopewell Cemetery, Lagro, IN. Arrangements are entrusted to McKee Mortuary, 1401 State Road 114 West, North Manchester, IN. For those who wish to honor the memory of Donald T.
