Dean Kindy, North Manchester, Indiana died January 27, 2012. He was born at North Manchester, IN in 1921 to Ivan & Dessa Kindy. Most of his early years were spent on the family farm in Naperville, Illinois before attending and graduating from Manchester College. He started working in 1947 at the Church of the Brethren Service Center in New Windsor, Maryland with relief and refugee work after the war. There he met and in 1948 married June Zimmerman with whom he was to be graced with 63 years of marriage. Dean is survived by June and their five children, Cliff (Arlene) Kindy, North Manchester, IN; Bruce (Donna) Kindy, Wooster, OH; Joe (Peggy) Kindy, Sterling, OH; Treva Schar, Wooster, OH; Gloria (Dan Garrett) Kindy, Rockville, MD. He and June have 12 grandchildren and 22 great grandchildren. Also surviving are two brothers and two sisters. He was preceded in death by three brothers and a sister. After being called to the ministry by his congregation in Naperville he graduated from Bethany Theological Seminary in Chicago, IL and spent the next 34 years as a pastor in the Church of the Brethren. The early years were with the Crystal and New Haven congregations in Michigan and then longer tenures with the Chippewa and Lake Breeze congregations in Ohio. A colleague praised Dean as a peace and justice pioneer. Dean and June were active with migrant ministry in Florida while serving in the second Brethren Volunteer Service unit and he picked up that ministry again during the Michigan years. The family frequently sponsored refugees and worked with exchange students, many of whom lived for a time with the family. After retirement Dean and June volunteered again at the New Windsor Service Center, spent time as Heifer Project Host and Hostess in Massachusetts and Dean worked with the disaster response program of the denomination and was a guest preacher in area churches near his home . Memorial services will be held February 12, 2012 at 2:00 p.m. in Eel River Community Church of the Brethren, 2507 E State Road 14, Silver Lake, IN. McKee Mortuary, North Manchester, IN is assisting the family with arrangements .
