Charles R. Shaffer Jr., 89, Laketon, IN died at 12:30 a.m. Wednesday, April 10, 2013 in his residence. He was born February 2, 1924 in Wabash County, IN to Charles R. & Adelia Louisa (Moore) Shaffer Sr. He was a member of the US Army from 1943-1946. He served as a M.P. in Alaska and later served in the infantry with the 3rd Army under General George S. Patton. He was a recipient of the Combat infantry Badge. After the war he served as provost sergeant with the 14th infantry regiment. He enjoyed the fur trading business and was a member of The Fur Takers of America and The National Trappers Association. He was also a member of the American Legion Post #40, Laketon, IN, VFW, Indianapolis, IN and D.A.V., Elkhart, IN and the Moose Lodge, North Manchester, IN. He was an avid outdoorsman and nature lover and enjoyed trapping, fishing and collecting medicinal roots. He was an extrusion die maker at General Tire & Rubber Co., Wabash, IN for 37 1/2 years, retiring in 1979. He is survived by one son, Gary (Barbara) Shaffer, Ft. Wayne, IN; one sister, Marcia (Barnette) Wolfrum, LaFontaine, IN; four grandchildren, Ryan Shaffer, Lake In The Hills, IL, Jocelyn (Wade) Irvine, Pewaukee, WI, Rory (Kimberly) Shaffer, Stillwater, MN and Brie Anne (Scott) Marker, Ft. Wayne, IN and seven great grandchildren. One sister, Iona Poston, is deceased. In honoring Mr. Shaffer's wishes, there will be no services. Burial will be in Laketon Cemetery, Laketon, IN.
