After the military chapter in Charlie's life was complete, he went to work for Heckman Bindery. For 27 years he worked as a salesman before retiring in 1989 to take care of his wife, Mary. During his wife's health struggles and his time in the military, faith was also important to Charlie. He was a member at Faith Lutheran Church, Fort Wayne, Indiana and Zion Evangelical Lutheran Church, North Manchester, Indiana. For all who had known Charlie, he will be remembered as the life of the party. He liked being social and enjoyed life, and the company of those around him.
