Alice N. Newcomer

March 1, 1929 — June 3, 2020

North Manchester

Alice Nadine Andrews Baldwin Newcomer, 91, North Manchester, Indiana, passed away peacefully June 3, 2020 at 6:05 p.m. Alice was born March 1, 1929 in Modesto, California to Loren and Gladys (Joyce) Andrews; however, her father died when she was almost two years old. When Alice was six, her mother married J.F. Baldwin, a Church of the Brethren pastor.

In 1944, at the beginning of her eleventh grade, she moved to Indiana to help her aunt, who was ill, and her family. Alice took her junior and senior years of high school at South Whitley High School, where she graduated in 1946. During her time in high school, she participated in drama and was on the newspaper staff.

Alice met her husband-to-be, Hubert Newcomer, in a youth group gathering of the Spring Creek Church of the Brethren in November 1944. They were married June 2, 1946, right after Alice’s high school graduation. The two were wed for nearly sixty-nine years. Together they enjoyed traveling, camping, playing games and reading.

Alice worked as an administrative secretary in public school systems for twenty-nine years, wherever her husband’s work took them in Illinois, Indiana, and Florida. After pastorates in North Dakota and Illinois, Hubert was called to be the pastor of the Manchester Church of the Brethren in 1957. In 1964 they moved to Elgin, Illinois, where Hubert joined the denominational staff. They moved to Sebring, Florida, in 1976 where Hubert became the executive director of The Palms Retirement Community.

Alice and Hubert moved back to North Manchester in 1993. After moving here, Alice enjoyed interior decorating, creating worship centers and working at North Manchester Public Library. While living at Timbercrest Senior Living Community, Alice was a member of Timbercrest Resident Council and assisted with the reception at the semi-annual Memorial Services. She was also a member of the Manchester Church of the Brethren where she served on the Executive Board, among other responsibilities.

The loving memory of Alice Newcomer will be forever cherished by her daughters, Nancy (John) Moore, Wilmington, Ohio; Kathleen (Alan) Uecke, West Chicago, Illinois, and Beverly (Fred) Schmidt, Williamston, Michigan; ten grandchildren, Erin (Jerry) Socha, Nathan Moore, Ryan (Alicia) Uecke, Jeffery (Brianne) Uecke, Steven (Erin) Uecke, Laura Uecke, Jacob Uecke, Daisy (Ericka Bates) Schmidt, April Schmidt, Abigail (Drew) Ruonavaara; eighteen great-grandchildren, and one great-great grandchild. Alice was preceded in death by her parents; husband; one brother, LaVon Andrews; three step-brothers, Arthur, Elmer, and Charles Baldwin.
