It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of our beloved A. Darlene Eckert, who departed from this world on July 5, 2024, at the age of 89. Born in Liberty Mills on December 31, 1934, Darlene was the daughter of Robert H. “Bob” and Blanche (McNear) Michael.
In her youth, Darlene was a spirited individual, shining as a cheerleader and excelling in sports during her time at Sidney High School, from which she graduated in 1952. On January 1, 1953, Darlene exchanged vows with her high school sweetheart, Richard Eckert, in a ceremony held at the Liberty Mills Church of the Brethren, where they both were members.
Throughout her career, Darlene wore many hats, ranging from being a dedicated secretary at Prizer’s Garage to serving as a cook at Sidney School and working in various capacities at sale barns. However, her impact was most profound during her twenty-seven years in the front office at Timbercrest, and also at the Liberty Mills Church, where she was treasurer for forty years, earning the respect and love of all who had the privilege of knowing her in that setting.
Beyond her professional endeavors, Darlene and Dick shared a life filled with cherished memories. They often escaped to Florida together, and Darlene selflessly devoted her time to assisting others with transportation to medical appointments. Throughout her life, Darlene’s life was filled with joy, laughter, and kindness.
The loving memory of Darlene Eckert will be forever cherished by her sons, Mike (Janet) Eckert, Birchwood, Wisconsin and Chuck Eckert, Sidney; daughter, Pat Leavell, Rochester; brother, Kam (Patti) Michael, North Manchester; sisters, Kay (David) Wall, Fort Wayne and Karen Wolfe, Warsaw; sister-in-law, Jenine Michael; seven grandchildren; twelve great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren. Darlene was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Richard A. Eckert; son-in-law, David Leavell; grandson, DJ Eckert; brother, Kennith Michael; and brother-in-law, Ed Wolfe.
